Book Buddy Program
Become A Book Buddy
Everyday we mobilize our community of volunteers to make a direct impact on kids through one on one reading sessions. Because the simple magic and joy of a shared book can change a child’s life trajectory. Reading at any and every age, helps us manage stressful situations, build empathy, add to vocabulary and expand our understanding of the world.
Children who are read to three times a week by a family member are twice as likely to score in the top 25% in reading compared to children who are read to less than 3 times a week.
Across the nation just under half of children between birth and age five are read to every day by their parents or other family members.
Volunteer Reader
Volunteer readers spend 20 to 30 minutes 3 times a week reading one on one with PreK through 3rd grade kids, modeling and fostering a joy of reading while supporting the child’s efforts to read independently.
Our readers are paired with the same children each week, developing a mentoring relationship with the child over the course of the year. Volunteer readers are essential to realizing Stand Up For Children’s Vision of a Louisville where all children can realize their full potential through reading!
